From the end of WW 2 in 1945 till its dissolution on 25th December 1991, the Soviet Union was the largest country in the world, competing with its arch-rival, the USA eyeball to eyeball on every global issue. However, it crumbled like a house of cards within 18 months after holding a first-time free and fair election.
